Garrett Family

The Garrett's aren't my ancestors but I've received quite a lot of information about them from Hollice Favors so I've included them on my site. (Thank you Hollice for sending the info!) William Garrett married Patsy Lamar and the Lamar's are my direct ancestors although Patsy isn't a direct ancestor. I have a program that has a relationship calculator and it showed me that Patsy was "Aunt of the husband of the mother-in-law of great grand aunt" of mine. I haven't quite wrapped my mind around that one yet but maybe in time I'll figure it out. I prefer the term "shirt-tail kin."

Generation No. 1

WILLIAM GARRETT (UNKNOWN GARRETT) was born about 1798 in South Carolina and died between 1850-1860 in probably Maury County, Tennessee. He married PATSY LAMAR about 1825, daughter of URIAH LAMAR and MARY "POLLY" BUTLER. She was born about 1806 in Warren County, Kentucky and died between 1850-1860 in probably Maury County, Tennessee.

Notes for PATSY LAMAR
Some researchers have PATSY married to BENJAMIN HENRY KELLUMS and I had her listed as married to this man as well. However, I'm not convinced she was married to KELLUMS. I had GREEN KELLUMS as son to PATSY but GREEN KELLUMS lived in Spencer County, Indiana and PATSY lived in Tennessee. Also, GREEN KELLUMS was born about 1827 and PATSY'S son, WILLIAM GARRETT, JR. was born in 1826 so GREEN couldn't be PATSY'S son.

Notes for LARKIN GARRETT
LARKIN GARRETT as a son of PATSY and WILLIAM, is based on circumstantial evidence, no actual proof. On the 1850 census for District 6, Maury County, Tennessee, all the GARRETTS shown are related. Since LARKIN is living in District 6, I'll assume he is related to those GARRETTS. In 1860, he is living with a 16 year old male named EDWIN. I believe this is really IRVIN, LARKIN'S brother, as the age is correct and the census taker just got the name wrong. (A common mistake on early census records.) He is also living very close to D. R. GARRETT, EDWARD GARRETT and MARTIN GARRETT, so again I think he is a brother to them. In 1870, LARKIN is living almost next door to MARTIN and in 1880, LARKIN is living next to DOCK R. GARRETT in Delta County, Texas.

Children of PATSY LAMAR and WILLIAM GARRETT are:

  1. LARKIN GARRETT, b. about 1825, Tennessee; d. unknown, Texas; m. CLARYMONDIE "CLARA" EMERSON
  2. WILLIAM GARRETT, JR., b. 1826, Tennessee; d. unknown; m. MANERVA BROWN

  6. DOCTOR R. GARRETT, b. 1835, Maury County, Tennessee; d. October 12, 1913, Delta County, Texas; m. MARY A.
  7. MARY GARRETT, b. 1838, Maury County, Tennessee
  8. DANIEL B. GARRETT, b. 1842, Maury County, Tennessee; d. after 1880, Lynnville, Giles County, Tennessee; m. 1) ANN M. WALDROP; 2) JENNIE

Generation No. 2

LARKIN GARRETT (WILLIAM GARRETT1) was born about 1825 in Tennessee and died unknown. He married CLARYMONDIE "CLARA" EMERSON, January 30. 1850 in Maury County, Tennessee, daughter of JAMES HARVEY EMERSON and NANCY. She was born about 1831 in Tennessee and died 1880 in Cooper, Delta County, Texas.

WILLIAM R. GARRETT (WILLIAM GARRETT1) was born about 1826 in Tennessee and died between 1870-1880 in Giles County, Tennessee. He married MANERVA BROWN, April 11, 1848 in Tennessee. She was born about 1821 in Tennessee and died unknown in probably Giles County, Tennessee.

Notes for MANERVA BROWN
I believe that MANERVA was the daughter of WILLIAM BROWN, who was either husband or stepson to MARY "POLLY" BUTLER LAMAR BROWN. In 1850, WILLIAM GARRETT, his wife, MANERVA and daughter, MARY are living in the WILLIAM BROWN household. In 1840, WILLIAM BROWN has a female in the household who is of an age to fit MANERVA. This family is also living next to LARKIN LAMAR (a son of MARY LAMAR BROWN) and WILLIAM & PATSY GARRETT. Evidence strongly suggests that MANERVA was the daughter of WILLIAM BROWN.

Notes for BABE/LADY GARRETT
On the 1860 census, there is a daughter named BABE who is listed as 3 years old. Whether BABE was her name or an indication for baby is unknown. On the 1870 census, it is stated that LADY died in July, 1870. Was BABE and LADY the same person? Or, was LADY another daughter who was born and died in 1870? If LADY was another daughter, then BABE must also have died as she isn't listed on the 1870 census.

Children of JOHN J. GARRETT and MAHALA A. INGRAM are:

  1. JAMES M. GARRETT, b. 1856, Giles County, Tennessee
