Bailey Ancestors

Many researchers have Nicholas Bailey (b. abt. 1620) as son of Nicholas Bailey born about 1600 in England and that Nicholas as son of Nicholas born about 1580 in England. I've tried to find proof of the three Nicholas Bailey men but so far I haven't. Information listed for Generations 1 & 2 was found on Ancestry.com. The majority of Family Trees on that site have these two Nicholas Baileys listed so I have included them here.

The Bailey name has some variations in spelling before the 19th century. I've seen the name spelled as Baly, Baillee, Baily and Bayley.

He's probably the "Nick Baly" who took the oath of fidelity at New Haven, Conn. July 1, 1644. He and his wife Margaret were living in Westchester before Aug. 4, 1659. He was a magistrate in 1660 and 1662. He received land in the second division in 1666 and is listed a patentee Jan. 1, 1686. On Mar. 4, 1689 he deeded to his son Nathan his holdings in the Long Beach Patent in Eastchester, and on March 5th he and his wife deeded their house and all land in Westchester to James and Abiah Riley of Queens County, in return for a bond of the latter to care for them during their life time. Witnesses for this deed were his younger cousins Elias and Jonathan Bailey, sons of John Bailey of Jamaica, RI. On Sept. 25th James and Abiah surrendered the deed and on Oct. 19th the property was deeded to John (their son) "he to keep and maintain said father and mother during life". Notes for NATHANIEL BAILEY
From The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society
...Nathaniel Bailey of Rye, grandson of Judge Nicholas Bailey of Westchester Town under whom Philip Minthorn was secretary of the Court of Sessions in 1659, wrote his will June 2, 1740, mentioning his daughter, Abigail, widow of John Minthorn. Four brothers or half-brothers of Abigail (Bailey) Minthorn moved to the Philipse Patent. Nathaniel Bailey took up lands in North Salem and may have moved to the Oblong in South East when it was opened for settlement in 1730. Tax lists show Nathaniel in the Southern Precinct in 1753 and in Fredericksburgh in 1763-79; Nehemiah in the Southern Precinct in 1740/41; and Nathan in Fredericksburgh in 1773. Levi bought a farm just across the county border in Croton Falls, Somers, Westchester County, in 1769 when the land was first sold, but was probably living there earlier. The Dutchess County tax lists for the South Ward/Southern Precinct, where Philip Minthorn was listed, include John Bayles (Bailey) in 1732/33 and in 1735/36, Nehemiah in 1740/41, and a number of Bailey's later.
