The Rhead family is difficult to research because the name has been misspelled on census records and various other documents.  It has been spelled as: Read, Reed, Reid, Ried, Reede and, on the 1830 census for Ontario County, New York, Rhea.  Because there are families with these surnames, it is challenging to differentiate between the Rhead's and other families.

Paul and Joni Lerum sent me documents they got at the Westland Historical Society in Wayne County, Michigan that indicate Robert Rhead (b. 1770-1780) was the son of Jacob Rhead, who was the son of Robert Rhead (d. 1770).  This information was obtained from Roland F. Rhead and Royena Hornbeck Tice.  It is intriguing and when I look at the children of Robert Rhead (b. 1770-1780), it makes sense as Jacob is the first born son and tradition dictated the first born son be named after the father's father.  All this time I've looked at the names and never noticed it before.  I have also found information on a website, Multer.com, that indicates Robert Rhead, Jr., (who died in 1810) only had two sons: Oliver and Aaron.  So it would seem that Jacob Rhead was the father of Robert Rhead (1770-1780 to 1830-1840).  I am still looking for information on Jacob and his wife, Sarah Covert.  

I received two e-mails from people who gave me the information listed for Generations No. 1 & 2 and some info for Generation No. 3.  When I asked where this information came from, both people told me they couldn't remember their source's name.  Doing a cursory search on the Internet didn't turn up any info on the people listed so I don't have any documentation to help verify what is listed.  However, I've decided to include these names in the hopes that someone can help me track them down.  Does anyone have any info on Nicholas Bailey/Baylie or Margaret Littletore, or John Archer?  

Generation No. 1

Robert Rheade was born unknown and died before 1718 in New York.  He married ABIGAIL BAILEY/BAYLIE, daughter of NICHOLAS BAILEY/BAYLIE and MARGARET LITTLETORE.

Generation No. 2

Robert Rheade (ROBERT RHEADE¹) was born December 7, 1705 in New York and died between 1757-1759.  He was married at Rye, Westchester County, New York, February 19, 1704/05 but his wife's name is unknown.

Generation No. 3

ROBERT RHEAD, SR. (ROBERT RHEADE²) was born 1715-1730 in New York and died 1770 in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York.  His will was proved September 18, 1770.  He married JANE ARCHER about 1747 in Eastchester, Bronx County, New York, daughter of JOHN ARCHER and ELIZABETH.  She was born about 1724 in New York and died 1793 in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York.

Generation No. 4

JACOB RHEAD (ROBERT RHEAD, SR.³) was born between 1752-1758 in Westchester County, New York and died May 31, 1838 in New York.  He married SARAH COVERT, daughter of ELISHA COVERT and MARTHA GEDNEY.

ROBERT RHEAD, JR. (ROBERT RHEAD, SR.³) was born June 30, 1748 in New York and died January 16, 1810 in Westchester County, New York.  He married MARY ARCHER, daughter of RICHARD ARCHER and SARAH VALENTINE.  She was born December 31, 1758 and died January 20, 1835 in Westchester County, New York.

On the 1790 census, Robert is shown with 3 males over 16 yrs., 1 male under 16 yrs. and 5 females.  Robert is one of the males over 16 so that would leave him with 3 sons - Oliver and two unknown.  His wife, Mary, is one of the females and his mother, Jane, is still alive and probably living with him so that would leave him with 3 daughters.  By 1800 he has another son, Aaron, and another daughter.  In 1800 there are 2 sons in the household and three daughters.  Oliver and Aaron are the two sons but what happened to the two older sons?  Robert only mentions two sons in his will so that must mean that the other two died before 1810.  Also, there are five daughters named in his will and he refers to one of them as Hannah Orsser.  Was Hannah married to Edward Orser?  Edward and his wife die between 1840-1850 in Mount Pleasant, Westchester County, New York.

ARCHER RHEAD (ROBERT RHEAD, SR.³) was born 1752 in Westchester County, New York and died May 29, 1833 in Mount Pleasant, Westchester County, New York.  He married 1) HANNAH ARCHER, daughter of JOHN ARCHER and MARY LEGGETT.  She was born May 6, 1750 in probably New York and died April 10, 1812 in Westchester County, New York.  He married 2) SARAH.  She was born April 9, 1771 and died August 26, 1836.

Generation No. 5

ROBERT RHEAD (JACOB RHEAD⁴) was born between 1770 - 1780 in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York.  He died between 1830 - 1840 in Phelps, Ontario County, New York.  His wife (name unknown) was born between 1780-1790.

I'm still working on this "missing link."  One clue I have to go on is an article about Benjamin V. Hornbeck, who married Phoebe Rhead.  (Click here to read the article.)  The story mentions Benjamin marrying Phoebe, daughter of Robert Rhead and leaving her at her brother's house in Plymouth, Michigan.  Phoebe is a sister of Robert D. and Aden so therefore, Robert Rhead is the father of these three people.  (It appears that Phoebe names her third son, Aden, after her brother.)  Another clue is the Robert Rhead mentioned in Military Minutes of the Council of Appointment of the State of New York, 1783-1821.  Robert is listed as a captain in Lieutenant Colonel John Gallup's regiment for Albany County in 1812; Robert Rhead, Jr. dies in 1810 so this must be his son.  Albany County is another clue because the article about Dewey W. Rhead mentions his father, Robert D. Rhead, being born in Albany, New York in 1818.

AARON RHEAD (ROBERT RHEAD, JR.⁴) was born about 1793 in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York and died after July, 1860 in Westchester County, New York.  He married ELIZABETH LYNT, daughter of ISAAC LYNT and ELIZABETH.  She was born November 23, 1798 and died December 4, 1859 in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York.

OLIVER RHEAD (ROBERT RHEAD, JR.⁴) was born October 5, 1782 in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York and died June 22, 1859 in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York.  He married MARY FOWLER, daughter of VINCENT FOWLER and DOROTHY VALENTINE.  She was born November 17, 1776 in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York and died October 17, 1861 in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York.  (Mary was living with her son, Benjamin, at the time of her death.)

Notes for OLIVER RHEAD:  In 1842 or 1843 in Yonkers, a dam above Ashford (5 miles north of Yonkers) gave way because of heavy rains.  Oliver Rhead owned a farm in Sawmill river valley, a little north of St. John's  Cemetery, and noticed that the river was rising rapidly.  He mounted his horse and rode down to Yonkers to alarm the town.  There was no mention of whether or not his ride saved any lives.  His brief story is recounted in Biographical History of Westchester County, New York.

He is buried in St. John's Cemetery, located in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York.

JACOB RHEAD was born 1786 in New York and died September 29, 1853 in Colchester, Delaware County, New York.  He married MARGARET/SALLY.  She was born 1787 in New York and died unknown.

I'm not sure who Jacob's father is but I've decided to include him because I do believe he belongs with the Rheads listed here.  His father could have been JACOB RHEAD (Generation No. 4) or ARCHER RHEAD (Generation No. 4).  JACOB is living next door to JOHN H. GREGORY in 1810 (Colchester) and I suspect JOHN H.  GREGORY was married to a RHEAD; if he was, then his wife could very well have been JACOB'S sister.

ADEN RHEAD (ROBERT RHEAD⁵) was born February 12, 1812 in Albany County, New York and died September 5, 1874 in Nankin, Wayne County, Michigan.  He is buried in Newburgh Cemetery, located in Livonia.  He married (1) EXPERIENCE before 1832 in Ontario County, New York.  He married (2) MELVINA WILSEY, March 12, 1846 in Nankin, Wayne County, Michigan, daughter of ABRAHAM WILSEY. She was born July 26, 1829 and died November 26, 1858 and is buried next to ADEN.  He married (3) SARAH ELIZABETH SHELDON, June 8, 1868.  She was born 1834 in New York and died unknown.

Notes for ADEN RHEAD

Aden moved to Michigan in 1836 with his brother, Robert D. Rhead.  Aden and Robert purchased land in Wayne County, Michigan and proceeded to improve the property.  Aden eventually sold his interest in the land to Robert.  Aden died in Wayne County and his first born son, Truman, eventually moved to Wisconsin while Robert's descendants stayed in Michigan where, I believe, they remain today.  Aden had three sons, Charles, George and Frank, by his second wife, Melvina.  George died young.

ROBERT D. RHEAD (ROBERT RHEAD⁵) was born May 7, 1812 in Albany, Albany County, New York and died October 22, 1898 in Hudson, Lenawee County, Michigan.  He married (1) ADELIA E. KINYON, January 1, 1844.  She was born November 8, 1814 in New York and died May 4, 1862 in Michigan.  He married (2) JANE ROBINSON PITTS, daughter of WILLIAM ROBINSON and CATHERINE, January 10, 1864 in Michigan.  JANE was born April 24, 1830 in New York and died February 18, 1911 in Michigan.  Her first husband was PHILIP L. PITTS with whom she had three children: JOHN PITTS (b. 1847), JAMES WILLIAM PITTS (b. 1849) and CATHERINE "KATE" PITTS (b. July 1852).  PHILIP died before 1860.

According to the biographical information written about DEWEY W. RHEAD in Memoirs of Lenawee County, Michigan, ROBERT only had two children with ADELIA.  Those two children were WILLIAM and ARVILLA.  However, they had a second son, PETER, who died in 1852, long before the biography for DEWEY was written.  The mystery is on the 1850 census which shows a female named LAURA who is 16 years old and living with ROBERT and ADELIA.  ROBERT wasn't old enough to father a 16-year-old, so who is she?  She could possibly be a young sister of ROBERT'S or a niece.  No further mention is made of her and she disappears on the 1860 census.  By then she would have been 26 years old so she most likely was married.

Notes for JANE ROBINSON PITTS:

According to the 1910 census for Hudson, Lenawee County, Michigan, JANE had three children but only two are living.  DEWEY RHEAD and WILLIAM PITTS are both shown on the 1910 census.  KATE PITTS-WILLIAMS is shown on the 1900 census as being a sister to DEWEY but can't be located in 1910 so she must have died between 1900-1910.  Also living in the household in 1900 is an 18-year-old female named Maud Williams, probably Kate's daughter.  Again, according to the 1910 census, Jane had three children; but I believe she actually had four.  On the 1850 census for Farmington, Oakland County, Michigan; Philip L. PITTS and JANE are shown with two sons, JOHN (2 yrs.) and JAMES (1 yr.).  In 1860, JANE is living with her parents in Canton, Wayne County, Michigan and has two children, JAMES W. (8 yrs.) and CATHERINE (6 yrs.).  I've concluded that the JAMES W. shown in 1860 is actually WILLIAM PITTS and that CATHERINE is actually KATE.  But what happened to JOHN?  I'm guessing he died between 1850-1860 but why JANE neglected to mention she had four children with two still living in 1910 is a mystery.

PHOEBE RHEAD (ROBERT RHEAD⁵) was born January 7, 1815 in Albany County, New York and died October 25, 1870 in Morenci, Lenawee County, Michigan.  She married BENJAMIN V. HORNBECK, February 14, 1833 in Ontario County, New York, son of JAMES HORNBECK and ELIZABETH DeWITT.  He was born December 21, 1808 in Milford, Sussex County, New Jersey and died April 30, 1893 in Morenci, Lenawee County, Michigan.

JACOB RHEAD (ROBERT RHEAD⁵) was born May 19, 1805 in Albany County, New York and died August 12, 1891 in Nankin, Wayne County, Michigan.  He married KATHERINE in 1828/29 in New York.  She was born July 19, 1807 in New York and died September 15, 1894 in Nankin, Wayne County, Michigan.

WILLIAM E. RHEAD (ROBERT RHEAD⁵) was born 1807 in New York and died before 1880 in Michigan.  He married ELIZABETH 1843/44 in Wayne County, Michigan.  She was born 1822 in New York and died unknown.

JAMES RHEAD (AARON RHEAD⁵) was born 1825 in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York and died between 1870 - 1880 in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York.  He married SARAH.  She was born 1829 in Ireland and died between 1865 - 1870 in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York.

JACKSON RHEAD (AARON RHEAD⁵) was born 1829 in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York and died before 1900 in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York.  He married JANE about 1853 in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York.  She was born July, 1821 in Ireland and died between 1900-1910.

GEORGE W. RHEAD (JACOB RHEAD⁵) was born in July 23, 1809 in Colchester, Delaware County, New York and died November 12, 1878 in Delaware County, New York.  He married ELIZABETH "BETSEY" HAWKS on August 22, 1829, daughter of HORACE HAWKS and HANNAH.  She was born May 2, 1812 in New York and died after 1880 in Delaware County, New York.

SUSANNA RHEAD (JACOB RHEAD⁵) was born in 1810 in Colchester, Delaware County, New York and died January 4, 1897 in Downsville, Delaware County, New York.  She married JOHN MERRITT about 1835.  He was born September 6, 1807 in Sullivan County, New York and died April 1, 1882 in Delaware County, New York.

JACOB C. RHEAD, JR. (JACOB RHEAD⁵) was born 1826 in New York and died March 16, 1885 in Colchester, Delaware County, New York.  He married JULIA A.  She was born August 1827 in New York and died September, 1905.

On the 1850 census, Jacob's father is listed as Jacob (55) and his mother's name is listed as Margaret (50), and there is a 6 yr. old boy named Oliver living in  the household.  On the 1860 census, Sally Rhead (73) and Oliver (47) are living next to Jacob.  Jacob's father died in 1853 so he wouldn't be listed but Jacob's mother is now listed as Sally.   The 1860 census seems to have the accurate information as far as ages are concerned but I'm not sure which name is correct - Margaret or Sally.

TRUMAN R. RHEAD (ADEN RHEAD⁶) was born March 26, 1832 in Phelps, Ontario County, New York and died October 30, 1899 in Garden Valley, Wisconsin.  He married PHEBE CATHARINE GREGORY October 12, 1856 in Wayne County, Michigan, daughter of HAMILTON GREGORY and ANN ELIZA FULLER.  She was born December 20, 1839 in Colchester, Delaware County, New York and died February 28, 1915 in Garden Valley, Wisconsin.

CHARLES PERRY RHEAD (ADEN RHEAD⁶) was born January 6, 1847 in Nankin, Wayne County, Michigan and died April 17, 1916 in Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan.  He married MAHALA WALKER July 23, 1891 in Lapeer County, Michigan, daughter of CHARLES AUGUSTUS WALKER and ANNA DENEEN.  She was born May 1, 1859 in Almont, Lapeer County, Michigan and died July 24, 1941 in Caledonia, Michigan.  CHARLES and MAHALA are both buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan.

FRANK RHEAD (ADEN RHEAD⁶) was born June 25, 1852 in Michigan and April 30, 1915 in Toledo, Ohio.  He married EDITH H.  She was born March 11, 1857 in Michigan and died April 25, 1946.  FRANK and EDITH are buried in Riverside Cemetery at Plymouth, Wayne County, Michigan.

WILLIAM D. RHEAD (ROBERT D. RHEAD⁶) was born 1844 in Wayne County, Michigan and died 1916.  He married Corintha G., 1876 in Michigan.  She was born April 1854 in Michigan and died 1937.  WILLIAM and CORINTHA are buried in Riverside Cemetery at Plymouth, Wayne County, Michigan.

DEWEY W. RHEAD (ROBERT D. RHEAD⁶) was born February 2, 1869 in Nankin, Wayne County, Michigan and died December 5, 1912 in Michigan.  He married ANNA MAE CORSER, August 28, 1901 in Michigan.  She was born March 30, 1875 in Michigan and died unknown.

HENRY L. RHEAD (JACOB RHEAD⁶) was born December 5, 1830 in New York and died May 18, 1910 in Wayne County, Michigan.  He married ELLIA 1853 in Wayne County, Michigan.  She was born January 9, 1837 in Michigan and died 1916 in Wayne County, Michigan.

JACOB J. RHEAD (JACOB RHEAD⁶) was born October 19, 1840 in Wayne County, Michigan and died 1925 in Michigan.  He married ELLA E. JACKSON February 21, 1869 in Wayne County, Michigan.  She was born 1852 in Michigan and died 1898 in Michigan.  I don't believe JACOB and ELLA had any children.

ROBERT OLIVER RHEAD (JACOB RHEAD⁶) was born November 5, 1842 in Michigan and died before 1920.  He married ANTHA O. BEDELL July 17, 1864 in Wayne County, Michigan.  She was born July 1848 in Michigan and died unknown.

BENJAMIN J. RHEAD (JACOB RHEAD⁶) was born April 5, 1847 in Michigan and died July 15, 1930 in Michigan.  BENJAMIN was a private in Co. E of the 16^th Michigan Infantry during the Civil War and served from February 2, 1864 until his discharge on February 29, 1865.  According to Army records, BENJAMIN contracted chronic diarrhea and pleurisy in May, 1864 near Culpepper, Virginia.  His Army Certificate of Disability for Discharge states that he is being released because of tuberculosis.  BENJAMIN never married.

AARON DAVID RHEAD (JAMES RHEAD⁶) was born August 1850 in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York and died between 1910-1920.  He married MARGARET ELIZABETH GREER about 1880 in New York.  She was born July 1856 in Ireland and died unknown.

MARY E. RHEAD (JAMES RHEAD⁶) was born September, 1856 in Westchester County, New York and died before 1920.  She married JOHN J. MITCHELL about 1879 in New York.  He was born February, 1850 in Ireland and died between 1920-1930.

MARY ALICE RHEAD (GEORGE W. RHEAD⁶) was born 1834 in Delaware County, New York and died 1914 in Franklin, Delaware County, New York.  She married MICHAEL PALMATIER.  He was born 1820 in New York and died 1894 in Hancock, Delaware County, New York.  They are buried in East Branch Cemetery in Delaware County, New York.

In 1910 she is living with her daughter, MARY ADA, and her husband.  According to the census, MARY RHEAD had 7 children with 2 still living in 1910.  Obviously one of the two living children is MARY ADA but I don't know who the other is or the death dates of the other five children who died.

SARAH ANN RHEAD (GEORGE W. RHEAD⁶) was born April, 1838 in Delaware County, New York and died between 1910-1920 in Hancock, Delaware County, New York.  She married JOSHUA SEACORD, June 7, 1858 in Delaware County, New York, son of THOMAS A. SEACORD and CORDELIA KETCHUM.  He was born February, 1835 in New York City, New York and died March 21, 1919 in Hancock, Delaware County, New York.

On the 1900 census for Hancock, Delaware County, New York, SARAH is shown being the mother of 10 children with 8 still living.  I don't know when the 10th child was born or when he/she died.

IDA FATINA RHEAD (GEORGE W. RHEAD⁶) was born June 16, 1843 in Hancock, Delaware County, New York and died March 8, 1914 in Delaware County, New York.  She married GEORGE E. MERRITT about 1860, son of JOHN MERRITT and SUSAN.  He was born August 1836 in Delaware County, New York and died 1905 in Hancock, Delaware County, New York.  IDA and GEORGE are buried in East Branch Cemetery, located in Hancock, Delaware County, New York.  Their son, Harland, is also buried there.

According to the 1900 census, IDA had 9 children, with 7 still living.  I've only found the names of 8 children but there is a gap between HARRIETT and HARLAND so possibly there was a child born in that time period. 

CLARA RHEAD (JACOB RHEAD, JR.⁶) was born 1850 in Colchester, Delaware County, New York and died before 1880.  She married ALFRED BYRON SPRAGUE about 1869 in Colchester, Delaware County, New York, son of DANIEL D. SPRAGUE and ANNA GREGORY.  He was born 1845 in New York and died unknown.

After Clara's death, it appears he married a woman named Emma and was living in Trumbull, Farmington County, Ohio in 1880.

Generation No. 8

JOHN HARVEY RHEAD (TRUMAN R. RHEAD⁷) was born January 5, 1864 in Michigan and died January 20, 1937 in Black River Falls, Wisconsin.  He married ALICE EDITH WILLIAMS about 1890, daughter of HARVEY WILLIAMS and WELTHY CARPENTER.  She was born August 28, 1869 in Black River Falls, Wisconsin and died April 23, 1937 in Albion, Wisconsin.

CORA MAY RHEAD (TRUMAN R. RHEAD⁷) was born August 1865 in Jackson County, Wisconsin and died August 1, 1920, in Hixton, Jackson County, Wisconsin.  She married ORVIS EDWIN BURNETT, October 19, 1882, in Jackson County, Wisconsin.  He was born January 9, 1854, in Neosho, Dodge County, Wisconsin and died 1916 in Hixton, Jackson County, Wisconsin.

HILLARD T. RHEAD (TRUMAN R. RHEAD⁷) was born May 8, 1868 in Garden Valley, Jackson County, Wisconsin and died January 21, 1932, in Eau Claire, Eau Claire County, Wisconsin.  He married NELLIE KARINA LANNING November 26, 1900, in Humbird, Clark County, Wisconsin, daughter of PEDER JOHNSON LANNING and INGRID P. LUND.  She was born March 3, 1878 in Jackson County, Wisconsin and died November 11, 1918.

NELLIE'S parents, PEDER and INGRID were both born in Norway and immigrated to America in 1848.  To my knowledge they are not related to the Lanning's listed on this website.

ELIZABETH (ALICE) RHEAD (TRUMAN R. RHEAD⁷) was born 1870 in Jackson County, Wisconsin and died 1929 in Jackson County, Wisconsin.  She married Fred E. Dunn about 1897 in Wisconsin, son of GEORGE DUNN and MARY.  He was born 1875 in Garden Valley, Jackson County, Wisconsin and died 1962 in Wisconsin.

AMANDA RHEAD (TRUMAN R. RHEAD⁷) was born October 29, 1870 in Jackson County, Wisconsin and died November 29, 1924 in Hixton, Jackson County, Wisconsin.  She married ELLSWORTH DUXBURY April 6, 1898 in Jackson County, Wisconsin.  He was born September 5, 1864 and died May 24, 1943 in Dimondale, Eaton County, Michigan.  Ellsworth Duxbury was formerly married (November 9, 1890) to Lucy Alphreta Lyon.

SIDNEY TRUMAN RHEAD (TRUMAN R. RHEAD⁷) was born July 25, 1872 in Garden Valley, Jackson County, Wisconsin and died May 18, 1941 in Lyman County, South Dakota.  He married LINDA MAY HENDERSON March 1, 1899 in Merrillan, Jackson County, Wisconsin.  She was born January 20, 1876 in Wisconsin and died December 30, 1957.

LEE D. RHEAD (TRUMAN R. RHEAD⁷) was born June 6, 1875 in Alma Center, Jackson County, Wisconsin and died 1908 in Jackson County, Wisconsin.  He married AGNES LOWE November 29, 1905 in Jackson County, Wisconsin, daughter of JOHN LOWE and ANN.  She was born April 24, 1885 in Jackson County, Wisconsin and died 1970 in Hixton, Jackson County, Wisconsin.  She is buried in Sechlerville Cemetery in Hixton.

ALBERTIE (BERTIE) RHEAD (TRUMAN R. RHEAD⁷) was born April, 1876 in Garden Valley, Jackson County, Wisconsin and died after 1930.  She married (1) AUGUST C. FANNIE CASSIE RHEAD (TRUMAN R. RHEAD⁷) was born September, 1879 in Garden Valley, Jackson County, Wisconsin and died 1936 in Garden Valley, Jackson County, Wisconsin.  She married FRED DUNN December 5, 1897 in Wisconsin, son of JAMES DUNN and MARY A.  He was born April, 1869 in Garden Valley, Jackson County, Wisconsin and died 1941 in Garden Valley, Jackson County, Wisconsin.

WILLIAM ROBERT RHEAD (TRUMAN R. RHEAD⁷) was born April 15, 1881 in Albion, Jackson County, Wisconsin and died July 22, 1953 in Janesville, Rock County, Wisconsin.  He married FLORA MAE ENDICOTT.  She was born December 6, 1888 in Boaz, Richland County, Wisconsin and died May 7, 1940 in Black River Falls, Jackson County, Wisconsin.
