My great-grandmother was Louisa Anna Mahan who was born June 18, 1866 in Perry County, Indiana.  I know her father was Alfred Mahan born in 1819 and her mother was Zion Hollingshead.  Just who Alfred's parents were is debatable.  Most genealogists agree it was Gabriel Mahan and Rebecca Roff but I don't believe Gabriel is Alfred's father.  First of all Gabriel and Rebecca were married in 1830, yet four of the six children "assigned" to them were all born between 1817 and 1825.  Secondly, Gabriel is shown on the 1830 census for Tobin, Perry County, Indiana and the only other person in the household is his wife, no children are listed.  That would be the case since he and Rebecca are married that same year.  For these reasons, I don't believe Gabriel is Alfred's father but I do believe Gabriel is related somehow.  Gabriel is born in 1800 and Alfred in 1819 so they could possibly be brothers but I'll have to keep looking for proof.

Alexander Mahan being the father of the second generation Mahan's is speculation on my part and is based largely on census records.  Birth years for these Mahan's fit with the children in Alexander's household on the 1820, 1830, and 1840 census.  Also, on the 1830 census for Perry County, Indiana, Alexander and Gabriel Mahan are listed very close together.  There also seems to be an absence of Mahan's in Perry County in the year range of 1830-1840 with the exception of Alexander.  The 1820 census was a little harder to figure out since there are quite a few Alexander Mahan's in various states.  I've been able to eliminate all but one - Alexander Mahan in Warren County, Kentucky.  Household members and ages fit with the 1820 Warren County, Kentucky, Alexander Mahan and there don't appear to be any Mahan's in Warren County, Kentucky in 1830.  There is a James Mahan in 1840 and other Mahan's in 1850 and I don't know their relationship to the Indiana Mahan's (if there is one).   Information I've found online indicate that Isabel and Mary were born in Indiana but if Alexander really is their father, then they were born in Kentucky.  Keep in mind, again, this is all speculation.

ALEXANDER MAHAN was born between 1770-1780 in Kentucky(?) and died between 1840-1850 in Perry County, Indiana.  He married UNKNOWN.  She was born between 1790-1800 and died unknown.

ALFRED ADAM MAHAN (ALEXANDER MAHAN¹) was born July, 1819 in Indiana or Kentucky and died March 14, 1906 in Huff, Spencer County, Indiana.  He married ZION HOLLINGSHEAD, June 8, 1856 in Tell City, Perry County, Indiana, daughter of GEORGE HOLLINGSHEAD and ELIZABETH BOSTIAN.  She was born November 19, 1839 in Ohio and died March 24, 1872 in Huff, Spencer County, Indiana.

GABRIEL MAHAN (ALEXANDER MAHAN¹) was born between 1804-1810 in Kentucky and died between 1835-1838 in Indiana.  He married REBECCA ROFF, January 3, 1830 in Perry County, Indiana, daughter of SAMUEL ROFF.  She was born 1801 in Pennsylvania and died April, 1870 in Troy, Spencer County, Indiana.

Who is GABRIEL's father?  On the 1830 census (eight names above GABRIEL), there is an ALEXANDER MAHAN listed who is old enough to be GABRIEL's father.  I don't know if ALEXANDER is GABRIEL's father but it appears he might be.

Notes for REBECCA ROFF

On the 1850 census for Troy, Perry County, Indiana, REBECCA is listed with the surname, FRAZIER.  She was married to JAMES FRAZIER on July 30, 1839 and he died before 1850.  They had four children: WILLIS (1838), ELIZABETH (1840), MARY (1842) and JOHN (1845).  REBECCA'S two MAHAN daughters, MARY ANN and MARIA are living in the household in 1850.  Of the FRAZIER children, WILLIS is the oldest, being born in 1838.  MARIA MAHAN is born in 1835 so GABRIEL MAHAN dies between 1835-1838.

ISABEL MAHAN (ALEXANDER MAHAN¹) was born 1813 in Kentucky and died between 1870-1880 in Perry County, Indiana.  She married BARNET QUICK, September 17, 1829 in Perry County, Indiana, son of DAVID QUICK(?).  He was born 1810 in Kentucky and died between 1870-1880 in Perry County, Indiana.

MARY MAHAN (ALEXANDER MAHAN¹) was born February 28, 1818 in Switzerland County, Indiana and died January 25, 1911 in Payne, Oklahoma.  She married ANDREW JACKSON BUTLER, April 4, 1838 in Perry County, Indiana, son of SHUBAL BUTLER and MARY PORTWOOD.  He was born about 1817 in Kentucky and died between 1870-1880 in Franklin County, Kansas.

MARY'S husband is a brother to THOMAS BUTLER, who married NANCY R. MAHAN.  NANCY is a sister to MARY.

From Kim Cooper-Luthy:  "She saw Halley's Comet in 1835 when she was about 15.  She was living on the Ohio River near Carrollton, Indiana.  She recounted that the people were terrified and thought the end of the world was at hand.  What is amazing is that she lived to see the comet return in 1910."

NANCY R. MAHAN (ALEXANDER MAHAN¹) was born about 1829 in Indiana and died unknown.  She married THOMAS BUTLER, February 27, 1849 in Perry County, Indiana, son of SHUBAL BUTLER and MARY PORTWOOD.  He was born 1829 in Hart County, Kentucky and died unknown.

On the 1850 census for Anderson, Perry County, Indiana, ANNA is living with her husband, CHARLES HOWARD, son GEORGE and her brother, WILLIAM MAHAN.  WILLIAM is born 1817 in Indiana but I don't know what happens to him as I can't locate him after 1850.

MALINDA MAHAN (ALEXANDER MAHAN¹) was born 1832 in Indiana and died after 1880 in Troy, Perry County, Indiana.  She married JOHN BRIGGS.  He was born 1807 in Ohio and died after 1880 in Troy, Perry County, Indiana.

Notes for MALINDA MAHAN

I've seen notations stating that MALINDA married JOHN BRIGGS, March 2, 1850 but on the 1850 census for Troy, Perry County, Indiana, JOHN and MALINDA are shown with a 3 year old daughter, MARY.  In this day and age, having a child 3 years old before getting married is almost common place but in 1850 it just didn't happen, so either the marriage year is wrong or the wife shown in 1850 is a first wife who dies and JOHN marries MALINDA as his second wife.

LOUISA ANNA MAHAN (ALFRED ADAM MAHAN³) was born June 18, 1866 in Tell City, Perry County, Indiana and died March 5, 1898 in Tell City, Perry County, Indiana.  She married WILLIAM LAMAR February 8, 1885 in Perry County, Indiana, son of ASA LAMAR and MISSOURI GOBLE.  He was born December 25, 1855 in Anderson, Indiana and died May 12, 1906 in Troy, Indiana.

ALICE MAHAN (ALFRED ADAM MAHAN³) was born March 1, 1857 in Lewisport, Hancock County, Kentucky (Indiana?) and died July 9, 1935 in Randolph County, Arkansas.  She married RICHARD A. LYNCH in 1880.  He was born June, 1858 in Indiana and died after 1930 in Randolph County, Arkansas.

HELM LOWREY MAHAN (ALFRED ADAM MAHAN³) was born October, 1862 in Kentucky and died May 11, 1928 in Maynard, Randolph County, Arkansas.  He married 1) UNKNOWN.  According to the 1900 census, HELM is widowed and I don't know the name of his first wife.  He married 2) IONA in 1903.  She was born 1852 in Indiana and died unknown.  HELM and IONA didn't have any children.

MARY BELLE MAHAN (ALFRED ADAM MAHAN³) was born December 6, 1871 in Indiana and died May 11, 1939 in Daviess County, Kentucky.  She married JULIUS THOMAS SAUER, July 20, 1894 (possibly son of CHARLES SAUER).  He was born June, 1860 in Germany and died after 1930.
